Israel says it will ‘flood’ Gaza with aidIsrael will try to “flood” the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid from a variety of entry points, the main military spokesman said as international pressure mounted to address the growing problem of hunger in the besieged enclave, Reuters reports.
After more than five months of its incursion in Gaza, aid agencies have warned that the area’s 2.3 million population face a growing risk of famine unless food supplies are stepped up sharply and they have accused Israel of not doing enough to ensure sufficient aid .
Israel says it has placed no limits on the amount of aid that it will allow in to Gaza, and blames failures by the aid agencies for delays but it has faced mounting demands even from its closest allies to do more.
“We are trying to flood the area, to flood it with humanitarian aid,” military spokesperson, Daniel Hagari told a group of foreign reporters.
Aid ship slowly heads for Gaza as calls for assistance grow
A first boat loaded with 200 tonnes of food aid was making slow progress towards the Gaza Strip as efforts grew to bring more humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian territory besieged by Israel, AFP reports.
The main UN aid agency in Gaza said an Israeli strike a day earlier hit one of its warehouses in the southern city of Rafah, killing an employee, although Israel later said a Hamas fighter was killed in the rocket strike.

The Spanish charity vessel Open Arms was on its way to Gaza from Cyprus, towing a barge with 200 tonnes of aid in the first voyage along a planned maritime corridor to Gaza.
Once near Gaza, the aid will be delivered onto a pier built for the operation by US charity World Central Kitchen, which will then distribute it.
